Golden Paste

Turmeric is called “the golden goddess” in India, where it is a common cooking herb and also revered as a powerful healing medicine.  Its list of medicinal properties is extensive, ranging from anti-inflammatory and anti-viral to anti-tumor and anti-carcinagenic. Used regularly, it can help with any inflammatory disease such as arthritis, auto-immune diseases and cancer.  Initial studies have also shown that curcumin helps regulate candida overgrowth in the gut and can help with acid reflux.  What a powerful herbal ally!

The main constituent, curcumin, is activated with heat or with hot spices and is more easily absorbed with fat. For this reason, golden paste is made with black pepper and coconut oil to ensure optimal bio-availability.

Here are my thoughts on dosing: I have always said 1-2 teaspoons is a good amount of golden paste for baseline wellness.  In other words, this is a good amount if you’re using turmeric to maintain a healthy lifestyle and as a preventative to inflammatory disease.  I also think it’s helpful to start with a smaller amount until your body and taste buds get used to it. So 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon is a good place to start.   One rule of thumb I came across as far as dosing is that there are around 200 milligrams of curcumin in one teaspoon of ground turmeric (though it varies a bit depending on the source and origins).  And studies say to take 200- 500 mg of curcumin per day for promoting good health, which would be about 1-2.5 teaspoons of turmeric powder.

Now, if you’re using turmeric to address a health problem, such as painful joints or digestive distress, some sites say to increase the dosage by up to 4 times! So that would mean 2,000 mg of curcumin or 10 teaspoons daily.  But then it is recommended to go back down to a preventative dose as soon as symptoms subside or after 2-3 months.

This site has extensive information on dosing, based on researching dozens of sites and studies.

Suggested Use:

Start with 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon per day and work up to 1-2 tsp daily as a preventative or maintenance dose.  Increase to up to 10 tsp daily to address health issues.  I put a spoonful in hot water with two drops of stevia and a splash of milk. It’s divine.  It’s also good in smoothies, tea, warm milk or even soup or stir fry. Enjoy!
